Spring season is underway at Greenhills. All seven varsity teams have begun the competition phase of their seasons and several teams are seeing early success, including the three-time defending state champion girls tennis team.
Tennis continued its dominating showing with a pair of 8-0 wins this week. On Tuesday, the Gryphons went on the road and downed Dexter before hosting fellow division 4 power Traverse City St. Francis. After the pair of non-conference victories, the Gryphons will turn their eyes towards conference play next week when they host Marian High School on Tuesday.
Girls tennis is not the only program defending a championship this year. Varsity baseball, which won the school's first conference championship last season, also made a big statement, defeating Waterford Our Lady of Lakes twice this week by the score of 13-1. The Gryphons and Lakers battled in a close conference championship game last season, with Greenhills narrowly taking home the title with a 2-1 win. However, this season, the Gryphons offense came out swinging. Junior Nick Roney led the way on the mound, striking out 15 batters dominant game 1 performance. Now with a 2-0 record in conference, the Gryphons will look to build on their perfect conference start when they host Bishop Foley on Thursday.
Finally, boys golf took home first place in the annual Greenhills invitational. The team posted a score of 320, beating second place Grosse Ile by 18 strokes and third place Ann Arbor Huron by 22 strokes. Junior Tai Mackey led the field with a career-best 76, also his first tournament win. Seniors Aidan Drain and Ollie Beekman also earned top-5 finishs for the Gryphons, scoring 81. Only one stroke behind, and finishing tied for 7th, were fellow Gryphons Michael Nakashima, Keating Holland, and Owen Gregg.
