Baseball Wins Thriller for Second Consecutive CHSL Championship
On Thursday, Greenhills varsity baseball headed to The Corner Ball Park in Detroit, looking to defend their 2024 CHSL championship (the school’s first such title). A familiar spring foe stood in their way - Royal Oak Shrine, a top-10 team in division 4, as ranked by the Michigan High School Coaches Association. The game got off to a tight start with each team’s starting pitchers putting on dominant displays. After four scoreless innings, the Knights struck with a 2-run double to break the stalemate. Junior starting pitcher Nick Roney finished the game going 5 innings, giving up only 2 hits and striking out 10. For one of the few times all year, Greenhills found themselves having to orchestrate a late inning comeback. However, after remaining scoreless through the fifth and sixth innings, things started to look grim. In the bottom of the seventh, though, Greenhills showed life. Freshman Sam Dorfman and sophomore Twoey Bullock reached base to turn the lineup over to lead-off hitter Fran Love with no outs. Love singled to right, his second hit of the day, to pull Greenhills within one run. After an intentional walk, senior Talen Pilz came to the plate with the bases loaded and the tying run on second. Pilz deliver with a walk-off single that scored two runs and gave Greenhills its second conference championship in school history. View video of the game-winning hit here.
Greenhills, recently profiled by MLive, now turns its sights to the MHSAA State Tournament. The Gryphons will travel to Clinton this Saturday, playing the host Red Wolves at 10am. The winner moves on to the district championship game that day at 3pm.
Soccer Advances to District Championship Today
Greenhills varsity soccer cruised to another dominant MHSAA post-season win on Tuesday, defeating Grass Lake 8-0. Six different players scored for Greenhills, including two goals for sophomore Cate Alumkal and two goals from senior Mia Melendez. Greenhills advances to the MHSAA district championship today where they will face host and top-ranked Milan. Kick-off is scheduled for 6pm - Greenhills students in attendance will receive a free rally towel.
Golf Qualifies for States
Greenhills golf is heading back to the MHSAA State finals! The team finished third at regionals, securing the final spot to advance, but it wasn’t easy. With 4 holes to play, Greenhills was trailing by 10 strokes. However, the team rallied and overcame the deficit, earning third place by two strokes and a trip to The Meadows at Grand Valley State University this weekend. Sophomore Keating Holland led the Gryphons, shooting 81, which was good for 11th place. Junior Tai Mackey, senior Michael Nakashima, freshman John Hu, and senior Aidan Drain all shot in the 80’s to secure the bid to states.
