Soccer Wins Second Straight District Championship with Overtime Thriller
On Friday, Greenhills varsity soccer won their second straight district championship with a 2-1 overtime win against host Milan. The Gryphons struck first thanks to a second effort goal from senior Mia Melendez in the first half. However, Milan would answer and both teams entered half time with a goal apiece. After a scoreless 40 minutes of second half play, the game headed to an overtime, where a shootout looked inevitable. However, the Gryphons broke through thanks to a corner kick header from sophomore Cate Alumkal. That goal turned out to be the game-winner, giving Greenhills its 17th district championship in school history. Watch highlights of the game here.
The soccer team’s season concluded on Tuesday night with a 0-1 loss to Warren Regina in the MHSAA Regional semifinal.
