Gryphons Shining in Fall’s First Varsity Round-Up

Remarkably, our fall upper school seasons are completing their fifth week of the season. With conference play well underway, several Greenhills programs are eying CHSL post-season berths. Additionally, we’ve already had our first wave of MHSAA Regional and State cut times made in cross country and swimming. Regardless of the competitive success (though there’s plenty to celebrate), each team is building community and fostering joy. I’m pleased to share with you the first varsity round up of the 2025-26 school year!

Cross Country

On Wednesday, cross country competed in the first CHSL Jamboree on the season. The Greenhills girls ran away from the pack in impressive fashion with a score of 26, a whopping 44 points ahead of second place Everest Collegiate. Leading the way was Junior Libby Schuster finished second overall with a time of 21:22.55. Senior Nina Malani (4th, 22:46.56), senior Harper Cash (6th, 23:29.07) and senior Emme Ravikumar (10th, 23:57.77) all placed in the top-ten. Meanwhile, the boys team also took home first place, albeit in a slightly closer race. With a score of 37, Greenhills stayed in front of second place Royal Oak Shrine by 10 points. Four Gryphons found their way to the top ten: junior Naveen Kulkarni (5th place, 17:19.44), senior Henry Beck (17:42.17), senior Nico Aagesen (7th, 17:43.71), and junior Roger Mariani (10th, 18:28.82). Cross country looks to continue their success this Saturday at the 57th Annual Holly-Duane Raffin Festival of Races.

Field Hockey

Varsity field hockey is off to one of the hottest starts in school history. Sitting at 6-1, the Gryphons are atop the CHSL standings. The highlight of the season thus far has been a 3-0 victory over rival Father Gabriel Richard. Most recently, Greenhills took care of business on the road with a 8-0 victory over Regina High School. Greenhills next travels to Academy of the Sacred Heart for a tough CHSL road matchup. Sacred Heart will pay a return visit on 9/23/25 for Greenhills’ next home game, and senior night.

Golf

Varsity golf continues to grow quickly after graduating one of the strongest senior classes in program history. This week, Greenhills won a tri-match against local rivals Huron High School and Father Gabriel Richard. The Gryphons' score of 206 outpaced the River Rats’ 215 and the Irish’s 221 in a close matchup that could have went any way. Leading the way for Greenhills was ninth grader Rania Tajuddin with a score of 47. Senior Saaya Doshi finished 6th with a score of 51 and junior CC Jarjoura shot 52. Sophomore Grace Momoh’s 56 rounded out the Greenhills foursome and first place finish.

Soccer

Varsity soccer is rounding into form. At 4-2-1, Greenhills has bounced back from tough loses to state-ranked Cranbrook with two key CHSL wins. Last Thursday, the Gryphons took care of business with a 4-0 victory over Macomb Lutheran North. This week, Greenhills hit the road and defeated Divine Child is a tight 2-1 contest. Today, Thursday, Greenhills looks to avenge a road draw with Orchard Lake St. Mary’s.

Swimming

Varsity swim continues to grow at exponential rates. This past week, Greenhills competed in the Laker Invite, competing exclusively against division 1 schools. Greenhills punched above its weight class with a second place finish, only 26 points behind first place West Bloomfield and an impressive 60 points ahead of third place Walled Lake Central. Greenhills earned three state cuts and sophomore Addi Gregg set two school records: 200 free style (2:01.48) and 100 breast stroke (1:09.75). Greenhills hosts Dundee in a dual meet tonight.

Tennis

Varsity tennis' state championship defense is well underway. The Gryphons have rattled off five victories in the month of September already, most recently including a resounding 8-1 victory over Birmingham Brother Rice. The competition remains some of the best in the state: today, Greenhills will host Detroit Catholic Central in a key CHSL matchup and this weekend the team travels to the west Michigan to compete in the Holland Christian Invitational.

Volleyball

No longer road warriors, volleyball finally hosts its first home games tonight, Thursday. The Gryphons kicked off conference play last week with a 3-0 victory over Waterford our Lady of Lakes. Tonight, Greenhills takes on league foe Detroit Cristo Rey.
