Greenhills Wins First Regional Championship

Game Date
Jun 8, 2019
Score
GRYPHONS: 6
OPEN: 5

For the first time in school history, the Greenhills baseball team has won a regional championship. In a 12-inning instant classic, the Gryphons defeated defending state champion Riverview Gabriel Richard 6-5 on a walk-off squeeze.

Senior Aidan Brewer started the game for the Gryphons, pitching five strong innings. Brewer began the game with a bang, striking out four Pioneers in the top of the first inning as well as scoring the first run of the game in the bottom half of the inning.  The Gryphons held a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when Riverview got on the board. The Pioneers had four straight base-runners reach, capped by a Nico Maloney two-run single. Brewer was able to strand two runners to end the threat, but not before Riverview took a 2-1 lead.

The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth. Senior Alex Winning led off the sixth with a walk followed by a sharp single by junior Alex Cole. With the Pioneer bullpen getting loose, junior Gabe Seir hit a two-run double to regain the lead for the Gryphons and chase starter Cole Atkinson. The Gryphons would push the lead to 5-2 before recording their final out.

However, the defending state champs would not go away easily. Relief pitcher Matt Silka hit a bases-loaded double to tie the game with two outs in the seventh, moments after a near-double play almost ended the game. With the score tied through seven, the two teams settled into a defensive stalemate, lasting until the twelfth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior Ben Cole led off with a single. After a sacrifice and a wild pitch, Cole stood at third with one out and Seir at the plate. On a 2-1 pitch, Cole broke for home and Seir laid down a perfect bunt to give the Gryphons the regional championship.

Later in the afternoon, the Gryphons fell to Homer (the eventual 2019 state champion) 5-1.

Greenhills finished the season with a 29-6 record and top-5 ranking in the coaches association poll.

In addition to their regional championship, the Gryphons earned their second straight district championship and won a Catholic High School League C/D sectional championship with a 15-1 record.  Coach Tom Ward was named CHSL C/D, District and Regional coach of the year in his second year leading the program.

Greenhills had 14 student-athletes earn All-Academic District honors, five earn All-Academic Region honors and one (Gabe Seir) earn All-Academic State honors. The Gryphons also had eight players selected to the CHSL Honors Teams and eight players placed on the All-District team. Seniors Aidan Brewer and Ben Cole earned All-Region distinctions. Brewer (committed to play baseball at Hillsdale College) earned All-State distinction as well as an invitation to play in the MHSBCA All-Star game at Comerica Park on June 20.
