Varsity Tennis Headlines a Dominant Week in Greenhills Athletics
Varsity Tennis Headlines a Dominant Week in Greenhills Athletics This past weekend, the varsity tennis team traveled to west to participate in the Allegan Invitational. The field showcased some of the top tennis squads in the state, providing the Gryphons a chance to compete at a high level with teams that they may see down the round in the state tournament. Greenhills showed why they are in a prime position to defend, yet again, their Division 4 state title. The team won a perfect 24 of 24 matches, sweeping Traverse City St. Francis, Grant, North Muskegon, and Allegan. The dominant performance concluded a week that also saw a sweep of Father Gabriel Richard and a 6-2 victory over 2024’s state runner-up Notre Dame Prep. Greenhills Soccer Picks Up Two-Win Week
Girls varsity soccer found its stride last week, picking up a pair of CHSL victories. On Tuesday, Greenhills hosted Lutheran North at Towsley Field. The Gryphons got off to a quick start, scoring three goes in the first half. Greenhills added three more in the second half to earn the 6-0 victory. View highlights here. On Thursday, Greenhills braved the cold, welcoming Everest Collegiate. Offense was harder to come by, but the Gryphon defense continued its perfect play, shutting out their second straight conference opponent en route to a 2-0 victory. Golf, Tennis, and Baseball Kick Off Spring Season with Perfect Starts
Spring season is underway at Greenhills. All seven varsity teams have begun the competition phase of their seasons and several teams are seeing early success, including the three-time defending state champion girls tennis team.Tennis continued its dominating showing with a pair of 8-0 wins this week. On Tuesday, the Gryphons went on the road and downed Dexter before hosting fellow division 4 power Traverse City St. Francis. After the pair of non-conference victories, the Gryphons will turn their eyes towards conference play next week when they host Marian High School on Tuesday.Girls tennis is not the only program defending a championship this year. Varsity baseball, which won the school's first conference championship last season, also made a big statement, defeating Waterford Our Lady of Lakes twice this week by the score of 13-1. Varsity Boys Swimming Closes Winter Season with a Top-15 Finish at States
On March 15, the boys varsity swim team wrapped up the winter athletics season with an impressive 14th team-placing at the MHSAA State Championships at Oakland University. Junior Chris Gregg earned All-State honors in the 200-individual medlay, finishing 7th overall with a time of 1:58.53.Gregg, as well as sophomore Jeremiah Green, also earned All-State honors in the 400-Freestyle Relay. The duo, along with Tyler Dillman and Michael Elliott, finished 7th with a time of 3:14.25, setting a new school record.The 400-Free Relay was not the only school record broken this year. Green adn Gregg also paired on the 200 Medley Relay breaking a 9-year school record in that event. Christopher Gregg also smashed six other school records this season, re-writing the record board for boys swim. New marks now stand in: 200 Freestyle, 200 Individual Medly, 100 Butterfly, 100 Freestyle, 500 Freestyle, and the 100 Breastroke.

A Week Ahead of the MHSAA State Championship Meet, Two Greenhills Swimmers Earn CHSL GoldLast weekend's CHSL Championships were full of drama as teams were not only competing for a conference championship, but also preparing for this weekends MHSAA Division 2 State Championships.How dramatic? How about a Gryphon championship performance by a mere 0.03 seconds? Sophomore Jeremiah Green, in the 100-Fly, swam to a personal best 52.87, only 3-hundredths of a second faster the University of Detroit-Jesuit senior Patrick MacKillop.In the 500-Free, it was another Gryphon taking home first place. Junior Christopher Gregg swam a season-best of 4:41.57, outpacing the second-place finisher by almost three seconds.Green and Gregg also joined forced on the 400-Free Relay, placing third in CHSL and qualifying for the state meet this weekend. Girls Varsity Basketball Earns Playoff Victory as Winter Season Closes Out
In 2023-24, the Gryphon basketball team found themselves barely on the wrong side of a tight 39-45 game against Manchester in the MHSAA District Quarterfinal playoff game.This year, it was Greenhills and Manchester, again, facing each other in the first round playoff game. However, after a year of growth, the Gryphons turned the tables on the Dutch, cruising to a 50-40 victory. The playoff win was the first for Greenhills varsity basketball in two seasons and an example of the steep progress made by the team under second-year head coach Taylor Parker.The Gryphons were challenged with a difficult task after their first round win, facining top-seeded host Plymouth Christian Academy only two nights later. The Gryphons fought and scrapped their way to a slim 2-point lead at hafltime, however, the Eagles came out firing in the third quarter. Boys Skiing Success Hopes to be the Start of a New Program
This winter, Greenhills partnered with Cranbrook Kingswood to form a co-operative team in the sport of boys skiing. While the Greenhills contingent is small - currently at 2 - success has come with it! Junior John Sadrack and sophomore Ben Bernstein competed in the CHSL Championships this past Monday, both finishing in the top 20. Sadrack medaled in both Slalom and GS (Giant Slalom), an excellent showing ahead of MHSAA regionals. Next week's MHSAA regionals will take place at Alpine Valley, where athletes will have a chance to qualify for the MHSAA state meet at Boyne Highlands.The co-operative agreement with Cranbrook lasts two seasons, giving Greenhills a chance to gauge interest and determine if there would be support for the growth of the sport on a long-term basis.Girls Basketball Wins Overtime Thriller to Close Out Spirit WeekOnce again, the girls varsity basketball team relied on a fourth quarter comeback to force OT. Basketball Quadruple-Header to Close Out Spirit Week on Friday
Girls Basketball wins Overtime ThrillerLast Friday, Girls Varsity Basketball headed to Cranbrook in a pivotal CHSL matchup. After falling to the Cranes a week prior, Greenhills needed to secure a win in order to strengthen their standings and bid for a CHSL playoff appearance. Things didn't look great at halftime, with host Cranbrook ahead 17. While Greenhills was able to cut the lead down to 14 to start the fourth quarter, it still appeared a longshot to complete a comeback. While the Gryphons kept battling, they still found themselves down 9 with only 2 minutes to go. Sophomore Libby Schuster got the comeback going, hitting a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 6 with 1:40 left. Schuster would add another bucket with a minute to go, bringing Greenhills within 2. Freshman Quinn Maldonado would go on to hit two free throws to tie that game at 49 with 10 seconds to go, forcing OT.The Gryphons would have to come from behind again, in overtime. Big Rivalries Precede Spirit Week
Spirit Week might start this upcoming Monday, but athletics is heating up already with all three varsity teams scheduled against big rivals.Boys SwimmingWednesday night, for the first time in program history, Greenhills boys swimming defeated Cranbrook-Kingswood 94-82. The victory was a huge step forward for the program and also in the CHSL conference race. The team added to their growing list of MISCA (Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association) Meet cuts and MHSAA State Championship cuts. Also, two more school records fell: Chris Gregg ‘27 set a new bar for the 200 free-style with a time of 1:47.38 and Gregg and Jeremiah Green ’27 contributed to a new school record of 1:41.42 in the 200 medley relay. Swimming Wins Second Dual Meet Against Divine Child
Returning from a winter break it seemed the boys varsity swim team hadn't missed a beat in their first meet of 2025. The Gryphons defeated Divine Child 139-15 in Wednesday's dual meet, moving their dual meet record to 2-0. You can watch Wednesday's meet here. Prior to the winter break, Greenhills defeated Ypsilanti Lincoln 123-57. The pair of dual meet wins, in addition to a second place finish at the Fenton Relays, has set up the team for what promises to be a strong 2024-25 season.“As a whole, the team is miles better than they were at this time last year,” said head coach Katie Capelli. “It's super exciting to see how much everyone has improved from last year's conference championships, so we're very excited for the rest of the season.”This season has already featured new school records with more expected to come.
